Work experience I still wish to have
I’ve worked in the bar for years—mainly behind the bar, and in bediening when needed. I’ve been out at Kooltuin, De Tuin, Aloha, Paradiso, Paraloha, Rockville, Pilaren. Not long ago I was sitting in De Tuin just before Oud en Nieuw, and in that moment I realised something with the same clarity I had years ago around my social transition: working behind a bar is a real dream of mine. I’m usually most alive in the evening, and I want to work in a place where I feel safe.
I was at De Tuin, at the corner of the bar table, and I looked at Daan—someone I’ve known since we were kids. I felt it clearly: I’m jealous of a workplace like that. Even knowing it would make sense to apply or to ask for a day of meelopen, I said nothing. I’ve promised myself to start doing the things I usually leave for later.
2026 is my year—I’m sure of it. In a few days I’m having a blood test to get a baseline for my testosterone and estrogen levels. On 7 January 2026 I want to start HRT (hormone replacement therapy) and find my own place in this life as soon as I can. I want to stop only observing and start taking my life into my own hands. I work with my whole family, and I know the only way to move forward is to tackle exactly the things I keep putting off.
That’s the work experience I still wish to have: a bar or hospitality role where I can show up fully, in a place that feels safe, and step into the life I’ve been waiting for. If that resonates with you or your team, I’d love to talk.
